Victor Clay Barringer Scholarships

These scholarships are in honor of Victor Clay Barringer and are given by Coastal Lumber Company, Inc. Victor Barringer founded Coastal Lumber Company in 1937. Today it is one of the largest privately held forest products companies in the United States. Victor Barringer’s father, Paul B. Barringer, was President of Virginia Tech from 1907-1913. Coastal Lumber Company is now guided by Victor Barringer’s son, Paul B. Barringer II, Chairman and CEO, and his grandson, Victor C. Barringer II, Vice Chairman. The scholarships provide $1500 each to two outstanding students in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products. The Victor Clay Barringer Scholarships were the first to be endowed with the Center for Forest Products Marketing and Management.

Joseph W. Fitzpatrick Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of Joseph W. Fitzpatrick and given by Fitzpatrick and Weller, Inc. Fitzpatrick and Weller, Inc. is a leader in the hardwood dimension industry and is managed by the brothers of Joseph W. Fitzpatrick, Dana and Gerard Fitzpatrick. The scholarship provides $750 to an outstanding student in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products.

Robert R. Bushman/The Mann and Parker Lumber Company Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of Robert R. Bushman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Mann and Parker Lumber Company. The Mann and Parker Lumber Company is a major wholesaler of wood products and specializes in hardwood lumber. This scholarship provides $500 to an outstanding student in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products.

Virginia Forest Products Association Scholarship

This scholarship is presented by the Virginia Forest Products Association, an industry group that supports forest products enterprises in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The scholarship provides $1000 to a promising Wood Science and Forest Products student with an interest in working with the Virginia forest products industry.

James W. Howard/Atlanta Hardwood Corporation Internship Scholarship

Recognizing the need for scholarships to attract, retain, encourage, and support students in the field of forest products, the Donor hereby establishes the James W. Howard/Atlanta Hardwood Corporation Internship Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding summer intern in the amount of $1000.

Consideration for this scholarship is given to all interns who have worked for Atlanta Hardwood Corporation during the previous summers. Selection will be made by Atlanta Hardwood Corporation based on the job reviews provided by each supervisor throughout the summer, as well as their final project. The scholarship is open to interns from both Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and North Carolina State University.

Boehm-Madisen Lumber Company, Inc. Scholarship

Boehm-Madisen Lumber Company, Inc., founded in 1934, is a wholesale distributor of hardwood and softwood lumber as well as a number of specialty products. The Boehm-Madisen Lumber Company, Inc. Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to an outstanding student within the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products. The annual scholarship provides $500 toward the cost of tuition.

Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. Scholarship

The Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc., founded in 1928, is an association of Appalachian lumbermen, wholesalers, landowners, and hardwood consumers. Their focus is to promote the distinct advantages of hardwoods produced in the Appalachian region of the United States, and promote sound forestry practices to ensure a steady supply of wood for the future. The Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance for an outstanding student in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products and is awarded in the amount of $1500, $750 in the Fall and $750 in the Spring.

Linden Lumber Company Scholarship in Forest Products

Linden Lumber Company is a nationally recognized hardwood lumber manufacturer located throughout the South. The Linden Lumber Company Scholarship in Forest Products was established to provide financial assistance to an outstanding student within the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products. The annual scholarship provides $500 toward the cost of tuition.

Danzer Group Scholarship

Danzer Group offers the Danzer Group Scholarship which is intended to recognize, encourage, and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products who plan a career within the forest products industry. Recipients for the Danzer Group Scholarship can be selected from graduate or undergraduate students in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products based on academic achievement and/or potential for superior academic achievement and the desire to pursue a career in the forest products industry.

Columbia Forest Products Scholarship

The Columbia Forest Products Company Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding student in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products. Preference will be given to any candidate who successfully completes a summer internship with Columbia Forest Products. Further preference will be given to a student from the areas of Danville, Virginia; Pittsylvania County, Virginia; Thomasville, North Carolina; McDowell County, North Carolina; and Craigsville, West Virginia. The scholarship is awarded in the amount of $3000, $1500 for the fall semester and $1500 for the spring semester.

Baillie Lumber Company Scholarship

Baillie Lumber Company, founded in 1923, is a large producer and distributor of high quality hardwoods, recognized both domestically and internationally. Acknowledging the need for scholarships to attract, retain, encourage, and support students in the field of forest products, Baillie Lumber Company will award $1500 to an outstanding student enrolled in the Wood Products option at Virginia Tech. Preference for this scholarship is given to all interns who will be working for Baillie Lumber Company during the following summer. However, if no intern is available, the scholarship will be awarded to any other outstanding full-time studnet in the Wood Products option in the College of Natural Resources.

Snavely Forest Products Scholarship

The Snavely Forest Products Scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage, and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Dpeartment of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech who plan a career within the forest products industry. The recipient of this scholarship should be in good academic standing and also be active in on-campus and /or community programs. The annual scholarship provides $2000, with $1000 for the fall semester and $1000 for the Spring semester.

Frank Miller Lumber Company Freshman Scholarship

The Frank Miller Lumber Company Freshman Scholarship is intended to recruit and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Dpeartment of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech who plan a career within the forest products industry. The annual scholarship provides $2000, with $1000 for the fall semester and $1000 for the Spring semester.

Morgan Lumber Company Scholarship

The Morgan Lumber Company Scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage, and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech who plan a career within the forest products industry. The annual scholarship provides $1000.

Wood Components Manufacturers Association Scholarship

The Wood Components Manufacturers Association Scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products who plan a career within the secondary wood product manufacturing industry. The annual scholarship provides $1000.

Jeld-Wen Foundation Scholarship

The Jeld-Wen Foundation Scholarship is intended to recognize, encourage and provide financial assistance to outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products who reside in Craigsville, WV, Sparta, TN, Lexington or Marion, NC, or, if candidates are not available from these areas, then a student residing in Virginia or a neighboring state.. Two annual scholarships provide $1000 to be used for tuition, fees, or books.

Forest Products Marketing and Management Scholarships

Hardwood Publishing Company, Inc. Scholarship

The Hardwood Publishing Company, Inc. Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student interested in pursuing a career in the forest products industry. Recipients must have an excellent academic record and be enrolled in Forest Products Marketing and Management at Virginia Tech. The annual scholarship provides $1000 toward the cost of tuition.

Steven A. Sinclair Scholarship in Forest Products Marketing

Steven A. Sinclair was a Professor with the Department Sustainable Biomaterials (formerly Wood Science and Forest Products) and an internationally recognized leader in the field of Forest Products Marketing. Dr. Sinclair also started the Forest Products Marketing Program at Virginia Tech in the early 80s. Also, he initiated the Center for Forest Products Products Business and served as its first Director. Upon his death in 1993, many friends, colleagues, former students, and Center for Forest Products Products Business members contributed to a scholarship fund in Dr. Sinclair’s name.

Because of Dr. Sinclair’s interest and leadership in forest products marketing research, the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate student studying in the area or to an outstanding undergraduate who plans to atend Graduate School to study forest products marketing.
